Indian Residential School Settlement Agreement 2007

In 2007, the Canadian government and Indigenous communities reached a historic agreement known as the Indian Residential School Settlement Agreement. This agreement sought to address the harm and trauma caused by the country`s residential school system, which forcibly removed Indigenous children from their families to attend government-funded, church-run schools.

The settlement agreement also included funding for healing and reconciliation programs, as well as measures to preserve Indigenous languages and culture. Additionally, the agreement established the Indian Residential Schools Resolution Health Support Program, which supports survivors in accessing mental health and emotional support services.

The Indian Residential School Settlement Agreement was a significant step towards addressing the trauma and harm caused by Canada`s residential school system. However, the ongoing impacts of this system continue to be felt by Indigenous communities today. The TRC`s Calls to Action provide a roadmap for addressing these ongoing issues and working towards reconciliation, but much work remains to be done.
